On Monday, May 9th, Andy Warhol’s ‘Marilyn’ sold for $195 million at Christie’s, which made it the most expensive work of American art ever sold at auction. The Marilyn was one of five versions in different color schemes, known as “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn.” Commenting on the impact of the sale, Andrew Fabricant, COO of Gagosian galleries opined that it “shows that quality and scarcity are always going to push the market forward.” Andy Warhol’s portraits have become some of his most iconic and famous images.
As Warhol believed in the value of a portrait to bring visibility, so do we! To create your hand drawn Visible Women NFT portrait, we base it on your photo, much like how Warhol based the Marilyn portrait on a photo of Monroe. In order to grow our community and bring newcomers to web3, our portraits are priced to be affordable. As seen by this historic sale, an affordable initial price point is not indicative of future value- as the first works Warhol submitted to fine art galleries were rejected and he was dismissed by the inner circles of the New York art world. Most importantly, the love we feel when creating your portraits and the love we hope you feel having them is PRICELESS!! Monday’s amazing sale also confirms our conviction that portraits can grow in value based on subject (YOU), quality (hand-drawn) and scarcity (1/1). Warhol’s studio was known as The Factory, a gathering place that brought together intellectuals, drag queens, playwrights, Bohemian Street people, Hollywood celebrities and art patrons.
